Carlos Urrea / Dr. Sabrina Strickland : Week 8

 This was the final week of the Immersion program.

On Monday, I shadowed Dr. Strickland in the OR for the last time where she performed two tibial tubercle osteotomy distalizations. I also got to help my labmate, Salman Matan, collect healthy articular cartilage samples.

On Tuesday, it was my last day helping in the biomechanics lab. On top of helping Kalle with the usual testing and calibration, I watched how they tested a PVA meniscus in the joint simulator. It was interesting to see how the PVA meniscus could be used as a replacement and how testing is done to verify its mechanical compliance.

On Wednesday, I shadowed Dr. Strickland in the clinic where again I got to see the patient-clinician interaction and the imaging diagnostic process.

On Thursday, I presented about the immersion program to the HSS group and got to talk about how the research I did during the summer connects back to my research project in Ithaca.

Finally on Friday, due to my presentation, Dr. Scott Rodeo invited me to shadow a meniscal allograft transplant surgery. I believe this was a great way to close my time at the immersion program since this surgery related directly to my research project.

Overall, I had a good experience in NYC and I am grateful I got to work at HSS with the leading orthopedic surgeons in the US.

Carlos Urrea/ Dr. Sabrina Strickland: Week 7

 This week I worked msotly on my research project and only shadowed one day in the clinic. On Monday, I worked with Kalle and Tyler to prepare a cadaver knee specimen for testing later in the week. It was interesting to see how the knee is prepared to undergo mechanical testing and the reasoning behind removing certain tissues for ease of handling later on. Most of the muscles were removed from the tissue and the bones were cut to match the length of the testing frame. the bone were later potted in epoxy to ensure fitting into the frame. On Tuesday, I presented to the immersion cohort about my work during the summer, including both the research work and the clinic shadowing. After the presentation, we performed bio mechanical testing of the intact sample and checked that everything was working so we could continue with the rest of the conditions later during the week. Ellen Brooks/Dr. Robert Marx - Week 1

One action packed week complete already! The first few days of this week were filled with orientation meetings, introductions to Dr. Marx and his clinical team, and tours of the research facilities.  On Monday, I started shadowing Dr. Marx, his resident Dr. Braum, and his PA, Joe, through clinical rotations. As a person that has been in the patients chair many times, it is fascinating to see the doctor-patient interaction from the other side and to start to notice how the Dr. Marx is able to connect abnormalities in flexibility and gait to possible diagnoses.  I continued my shadowing of Dr. Marx late in the week in the Operating Room. Here I observed two total knee replacements, a removal of hardware from a previous, complicated ACL repair surgery, and an ACL surgery.
