Andi Garcia-Ortiz/Dr. Carli: Week 4 (June 26th - 30th, 2023)
Monday (June 26th, 2023)
I attended Dr. Carli's clinic on the 7th floor of the Weill Cornell East River Professional Building. I left early to go to the HSS Center for Advanced Materials and Engineering in Orthopaedics (CAMEO) Skeletal Biology and Orthopedics Course Day. The topics covered included Bone Development, Repair, Nonunions, Fracture Management, Bone Histology, Biomechanics, and more. The speakers were research and clinical orthopedic leaders. They included Dr. Joseph Lane, Dr. Edward DiCarlo, Dr. Marjolein Van Der Meulen, Dr. Kyung-Hyun Park-Min, Dr. Ryan Breighner, and Dr. Greenblatt. In between lectures, we were given tours of HSS facilities such as the Xtreme CT imaging room and the HSS hospital. I loved catching up with my Cornell Ithaca friends and labmates who journeyed to HSS for the day.
Tuesday (June 27th, 2023)
The Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI) research groups have their weekly meetings at 8am at HSS Research Institute on the 6th floor. The group is led by Dr. Mathias Bostrom and Dr. Alberto Carli. After the meeting, I attended a lecture by Prof. Amy Kuceyeski in the Department of Mathematics in Radiology. Her talk was entitled "Machine Learning for Understanding the Brain in Health and Disease". She discussed topics such as measuring human brain structure and function with MRI imaging, decoding the brain, White and Non-Hispanic or Latino Bias in AI, and much more. Back in the PJI lab, Christina Chao and I ran our first test for creating a standard curve for vancomycin. It turned out pretty linear but needed work.
Wednesday (June 28th, 2023)
I redid my standard curve for vancomycin in the PJI lab today and it turned out much more linear. We might redo it in the future, but it was good enough to continue on to the next phase of experiments. I also set up another MIC with finer concentrations of vancomycin. I also attended the ASBMR Student Cohort Series monthly meeting on navigating a career in Academia. My PI Prof. Karl Lewis was one of the presenters and I learned more about his journey to academia.
Thursday (June 29th, 2023)
We read the MIC today and made plans for the next phase of bone cement and vancomycin experiments. I also got to celebrate my labmate Samantha Bratcher passing her A-Exam and earning her Master in the process.
Friday (June 30th, 2023)
I shadowed Dr. Carli and his Physician Assistant Lexi Simon on the 4th floor OR in HSS. I shadowed five cases, 2 total hip arthroplasties (THA), 2 total knee arthroplasties (TKA), and 1 Hip Resurfacing. The Hip resurfacing was the most intense case of the day and there was a chance for the surgery to turn into a total femur replacement. Luckily, the hip resurfacing went very smoothly. Today was Omri Maayan's last day shadowing Dr. Carli and we all wished him the best on his medical endeavors.
