Carlos Urrea/ Dr. Sabrina Strickland: Week 5

This week was cut short due to the 4th of July Holiday.

The week started on Wednesday where I continued to shadow Dr. Strickland in the clinic and I was able to see a lot of diagnostics being done for patients with shoulder pain. It was interesting to see the variety of patients along the journey: diagnostics, pre-op or post-op. I also got to understand why some cases require surgicla intervention while other patients can solve their issues mostly with physical therapy. I look forward to continue to see more clinics on my last weeks in NYC.

Additionally, I worked in the Biomechanics Lab in HSS with Kalle Chastain to plan next week's data collection. The research will be looking at the differences in medial meniscal posterior root repair strategies using a Tekscan sensor. Most of the work in previous work has been done in validating tekscan data and understanding the degradation of the scan throughout multiple testing and the difference in positioning this sensor under a curved surface. This upcoming week we have decided to change the tekscan every two conditions tested to keep data consistent and avoid degradation. I am excited to see how this study can be used to inform clinical and surgical practice.
