Marysol Chu Carty/ Week 5
Since this week was the 4th of July, things were a bit slower. I spent most of the week in the lab setting up for the Menin inhibitor experiment next week. In previous weeks in the clinic, I had heard this drug option being discussed but it still seems fairly new with more aspects that need to be investigated before it becomes a common treatment. Menin is a scaffold protein that is encoded by multiple neoplasia type 1 or MEN1 gene. From papers I was able to look into, Menin acts as a tumor suppressor in endocrine organs but it's required for the development of leukemia. Currently, there are various ongoing clinical trials mainly focused on Leukemias to assess the safety and efficacy of the treatments.
Next week will be a bit more busy as I head back to clinic and get to shadow Dr.Spector in some of his surgeries which are out of the area of my project but will still be a great experience!
