Salman Matan/ Dr. Gomoll week 4
T
his week, it was one of the best weeks so far in the immersion program. I start at Clinics on Monday, there were a lot of interesting cases where I got to hear and see all the MRI and X-ray results of those patients and how Dr. Gomoll was giving the needed explanation and suggested treatment plans that are suitable for them. On Tuesday, I did attend a Bone Lecture for the whole day in HSS. In there, we need how bone gets developed, and what causes fractures and learn some interesting cases of compound fractures getting solved in different mechanics. At the end of the long day lecture, we got a tour of all the HSS floors and learn what was available for students and medical trainees. On Wednesday, I had to go OR with Dr. Cohen in the Plastic surgery department of Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Cohen performed three different cases of mastectomy. If a person has a BRCA1 positive will have a higher chance of getting breast cancer and those patients usually recommend doing a mastectomy but they also have routinely checked their Ovarian, pancreatic, and prostates to make sure they’re not getting cancer in those organs. On Thursday, I was in the OR with Dr. Gomall to shadow total knee reconstruction, reconstruction of ACL, and Tear meniscus. It was very interesting to watch all those surgeries and learn new tools that doctors use to do total knee reconstruction. Lastly, on Friday I was working at the Biomechanics by trying to develop a protocol to make a geometry reconstruction of 3D shapes of CT scans from total shoulder replacement patients.
